Best known for his poetic and beautiful books, many about his home on Scotland’s west coast and probably the most famous being ‘Ring of Bright Water’, he carried out research into and started a project farming eiders for their down with the intention of helping the local rural economy.  The project is documented in his wonderful book ‘Raven Seek Thy Brother’. In the same book can also be found one of the best descriptions of this beautiful bird. To add a further note of Northumbrian interest, through his mother, Gavin Maxwell was related to the Dukes of Northumberland.
